Entrepreneur has big plans for media firm

AN ENTREPRENEUR who never collected his GCSE results from school is heading up a media company with a turnover of more than £3million.

Sean Fergusson left school at the age of 16 and still doesn't know his exam results - even though he is now 32.

Instead, he went straight into the workplace as a furniture salesman and still remembers the name of his very first customers.

From furniture sales, he switched to fashion retailing and by 21 was an area manager for the South East with a team of around 50 people.

Now he is directing his energies at becoming a major player in Basingstoke. He has an ambitious business plan to create 25 new jobs for the town over the next three months, and is aiming for a 150-strong payroll in about three years.

Mr Fergusson, who lives in Fleet, moved his company brandedmedia to the Ringway Centre in Houndmills, Basingstoke, at the end of last year after starting up in converted barns in Winchfield only a couple of years ago.

He invested £150,000 of his own money in setting up brandedmedia, which also has a manufacturing base in London.

Annual turnover is already £3m and likely to pass £4.5m this year.

The company is becoming a leading player in the magnetic media industry, providing a one-stop shop and solution for companies by replicating CDs and DVDs and, on the creative side, designing media packaging.

Its impressive client base includes NTL, Virgin.net, Apple Computers, Littlewoods and the Ritz Hotel, together with work for the NHS, local authorities and the education sector.

Now the company is keen to bring on board Basingstoke companies and has already produced and packaged a DVD for Brighton Hill Community College.

Currently, brandedmedia produces in the region of two million CDs and 100,000 DVDs a month and has a monthly 250,000 mailout of CDs for companies.

It has already invested £20,000 on the next generation of technology, Bluray, which will enable discs to hold even more information.

Mr Fergusson and his staff are settled into their new 5,000sqft Basingstoke offices and distribution centre - but not for long.

He said: "In three years, we will be out of here into 10,000sqft to 15,000sqft premises, but still in Basingstoke. I love it here - it's perfect for us.

"It's proved to be a very successful move and it's where we're staying."

Mr Fergusson added: "I would expect a £6m turnover by 2006 and want to turn over £10m by the time I am 35."

The move to Basingstoke has already proved lucky for brandedmedia, as this month has seen turnover up 100 per cent on the same period of last year - 30 per cent ahead of forecast.

Mr Fergusson, who has worked in the industry for 10 years, revealed there was a simple driver behind launching brandedmedia.

He said: "I wanted a better lifestyle rather than sitting on the M4 when I was working for a manufacturer in London."
