Nations Favourite

It’s Lonely Hearts for the Nation!

The Beatles are still number one, as people in the UK have voted Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as their number one CD cover (39 per cent), perhaps some consolation after the Official UK Charts Company re-wrote rock history recently by displacing the album as Britain’s bestselling.

The survey commissioned by brandedmedia, a CD and DVD replication specialist, asked people across the UK to rate their top three CD album covers.

From Mars and Venus?
The results also show that for once it’s something that both men and women can agree on, with 40 percent of men and 38 percent of women choosing Sgt. Pepper as their number one favourite CD album cover.

The two sexes even agree on their second favourite, voting for Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. While men elected the classic Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers CD cover as their third choice, women went for a more contemporary option – the Scissor Sisters’ first album ‘Scissor Sisters’.

Surprisingly male respondents put Kylie’s sexy ‘Fever’ cover as their bottom choice, while she was placed sixth by the women asked to rate their favourite CD album covers.

Living in perfect harmony
The results also show festive harmony amongst the Scots (41 per cent) and Londoners (40 per cent) as they both agree that the rest of the Nation has got it wrong, electing Dark Side of the Moon as their number one, and putting Sgt. Pepper firmly into second place.

Golden Oldies
The choice of Sgt. Pepper as number one is unanimous across age groups 35-65+. But for the 25-34 year olds, Dark Side of the Moon just pips Sgt. Pepper to the post as first choice.

No surprises that the Scissor Sisters cover was voted number one by the 18-24 age group (38 per cent of respondents) but even they recognise a timeless classic as 28 percent chose Sgt. Pepper, as their number two choice, followed by Dark Side of the Moon (27 per cent).

Nb. November 2006 Official UK Charts Company’s research displaced Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band as Britain’s bestselling album by Queen’s Greatest Hits.
